Mother never could have done her book on her own, and it was impossible for me — her daughter — to help her. I tried and tried, but because we are related, it was like a man trying to teach his wife to drive.
The book would have never happened without you. Mother needed guidance, and she could listen to your suggestions because you are a professional: you had done it before. You were genuinely interested in what went on in her life, and that’s not something you can fake. The idea was for the book to be a fun, informal thing: the best of the old pictures and some funny reminiscences. But it’s become the official family storybook about the first few decades after our grandparents came over from Sicily. I’m amazed at how much the stories embody our family values and traditions.
