Memoir Book Process

The process of creating a memoir book (basic or deluxe) goes something like this:

TapeDeck.jpg

Recording of stories, sorting of photos. Mary Jane Soule and client meet once a week at client's home for three hours at a time. We have informal taped conversations and sort through photos or other memorabilia. Concurrently, any tape recordings we make are transcribed. This takes six to fourteen weeks, depending on type of finished book.

First Edit. Soule edits the tape transcripts into a manuscript and delivers it to client. Client reviews the manuscript and gives feedback. We discuss and agree on changes, corrections, additions, and deletions.

Second Edit. Soule incorporates the agreed-on changes and delivers the revised manuscript to client. Again, client reviews the manuscript and gives feedback. We discuss and agree on changes. Then Soule incorporates the changes into the manuscript.

Photo Selection. Client and Soule select photos and other visual materials for possible inclusion in the book. We spend one or two meetings narrowing these down to the appropriate number of images for the size of the book, decide where the images will go, and co-write captions.Keyboard.jpg Soule scans the visuals into electronic format and retouches them as needed.

Copy Edit. For deluxe memoir books, a copy editor does a pass on the text and captions and the manuscript is updated.

Printing (optional). Soule and client select a cover, decide on binding, and determine the number of copies to print. Soule handles printing and binding for cost plus 15%. Cost of printing usually varies from $5 to $20 per book. (Ten copies of a soft-cover spiral-bound book will cost around $57.50; ten copies of a hardcover book around $230.)

Note that printing is not included in the memoir book price since individual clients have widely differing needs and preferences.
